Today we worked on public access work with Zeus! He was a Very Good Boy. Zeus knew that he should wait patiently in line. He also knew that he should stay with the cart even when I (Kari) walked away to grab something. Doing public access work with service dogs in training can be difficult. SDiTs are not given public access rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) like full-fledged Service Dogs. Some individual states have laws guaranteeing service dogs in training public access, but this is not common.
Because of this, we do public access work in stores like Petco, PetSmart, and other pet-friendly stores. Many pet supply stores allow well-behaved animals who are on proper leads. Home improvement stores often have similar policies, although it is important to check with the individual store you plan on going to.
